The West Portal Lutheran After-School Sports Program
West Portal Lutheran School
offers to all students in grade 4 through 8 the opportunity to participate in
after school sports. Any boy or girl who
wishes to play a sport is placed on a team, even if he or she has little or no
skills.
Our
coaches are all volunteers. They give
their time and knowledge of the game to our children. They instill principles of good
sportsmanship, hard work, respect for their opponents and discipline. Winning is NOT emphasized at West Portal
Lutheran.
All
parents are asked to sign the Parent Code of Conduct paper put out by the
CYO. The CYO Code states: “The essential
elements of character-building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept
of sportsmanship and six core principles: Trustworthiness, Respect,
Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Good Sportsmanship.
West
Portal Lutheran School participates in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO)
league in the following sports: In the Fall: Boys’ Soccer and Girls’
Volleyball, Boys’ Basketball in the Winter, and in the Spring: Girls’ Basketball
and SFPSBL Boys’ Baseball.
There
are over 300 participants for the five different leagues. Some boys play in all three sports, while
many girls participate in two sports.
For every sport a boy or girl participates there is a fee. These fees are assessed to pay for entry
fees, administration costs (sports coordinator, gym directors, janitorial and
scorekeepers), sports award trophies and plaques, equipment and uniforms.
Overall, West Portal Lutheran School
has a thriving Sports Program. We play
in competitive leagues. We have many
successes, but the important thing to remember is that the children learn and
have fun. Please remember the CYO motto:
“The game is for the kids”.
